Vehbi Koç Foundation American Hospital Gallery “Opera- tion Room” presents “Curious Moments” a solo show by Ferhat Özgür, one of the remarkable contemporary artists in Turkey. The exhibition is on view from 19 September to 2 November 2014.

With a background in painting, Ferhat Özgür is mostly known for his photographs, video pieces and installations in Turkey and internationally. In this exhibition presents drawings, photographs and watercolors that he produced at different time periods alongside his video piece “Remains of the Day” from 2013, which will be premiered in Turkey for the first time. His works often emerge through performative staging of certain scenes that are sometimes explicit in their intention, but some- times metaphorical, ironical, surrealist and absurd. He applies a similar approach in the visualization of “Remains of the Day” using a different medium. Just like in his other works, streets and the city with their rich visual repertories appear as a main ground regarding their associations with newspapers, magazines, photographs from second-hand shops, humorous expressions in touristic postcards, various waste material and found objects. By using not only decipherable references but also with openended interpretations, the artist presents in this exhibition the selected works he produced extensively in 2008-2014. Religious discourses in various cultures and issues about militarism and political that he tries to highlight ironically in his works on paper enter a curious dialogue with the scenes in his performative video “Remains of the Day”. Curated by Derya Yücel, the exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue including explanatory interviews and texts that examine the works in the exhibition as well as the artist’s previous works. Following his next solo show with Costantino Ciervo at Gallery Bernhard Bischoff and Partner in Bern, the artist will open another solo show at Mekan68 in Vienna including his selected videos. His other works on paper, site-specific mural drawing and video are on view in a group show entitled “Mapping Strife: Reality and Perception’ at Deborah Colton Gallery-Houston until 8 November 2014.
