Perhaps this feature of the outstanding device in our pock- ets has become the least used feature of the phone. I have long met mobile photography, but It has been 2,3 - 3 years since I started to be into this in the first degree. I do not fully know how the mobile photography emerged, however, in 2007, mobile photos were started to be produced with the camera integrated into IPhone by Steve Jobs. But, it would be more accurate to call this IPhonography not mobile photography. This is like something; of course, when you take a photo with a camera of different brand, is it counted as IPhonography, yes it is, I don’t mind. Someone taking with Samsung can share their pictures with IPhonography hashtag. Because, IPhonography was not a thing invented with IPhone, now this has been name of the trend in the first degree. If we mention the historical process of this, I have just talked about 2007. Actually, this dates back to the previous periods, to 1997. Philippe Kahn, a computer programmer, integrated an optic to a phone for the first time, taking the pictures of his children. After then, I could not say the precise date, but there is SCP 5300 model of Sanyo developed in early 200’s between the device invented by Philippe Kahn on 11 June 1997 and the integrated camera into IPhone in 2007, which is the first mobile phone model with an integrated camera on it. Of course it is not the inventor, but the developer to remain in the minds.
That is, we call this IPhonography in that the inventor can be someone else but the developer is IPhone, don’t we?
Of course, we do not call this Sanyography, of course, we could have said this, but the vision is everything, the history has written who Steve Jobs is, that’s why he is called IPhonograph. There are a lot of branches and areas of IPhonography. As you know, today IPhone is not used to take photos, there are numerous usage areas of it in the field of medicine, music, photography and many more.
So, how did your “IPhonography” adventure start?
It started after I purchased Iphone-3., and this goes back to about 3-4 years ago. I loved having a device like this in my pocket. Not did I chose this as a phone, I took the first photo that made me excited in Sivas, to which I went for editorial shooting. When the light is nice for shooting, I took a picture and shared it, it was not bad at all, and I told myself it would be better when developed. Now, when the mobile photography is mentioned in any place, the people reach me in a way, and my articles on mobile photography have been published in many places.
Do you think that the phones have the sufficient technical equipment to take good photos?
Actually, there is a saying, I want to start with that. I liked I a lot when I heard this years ago. It says, “There cannot be any lighter that I cannot light, as long as it has lighter fluid inside”. The content of the photo has always been important for me. Even a narrative without any image can be of more importance for me than a photo that is taken with the best camera. After thinking in your mind and forming the content, the shooting photo is already the last job to be performed. If you gave me this in writing, I would be happy with this anyhow. That’s why I do not like the technical arguments, but we can also say that I work with Apple among the devices, which does not mean that I won’t work with the other devices. Presently, I take photos with IPhone, if you ask why, it is a habit, and more, the applications produced for apple store are very important as well. They are produced first for IPhones, work faster and are more developed. That the speed of the device is the same level as the date of purchase is another important factor. Apart from this, I have a camera with which I can shoot many photos. Apple has launched IPhone 6 and IPhone 6 plus models, leaving their resolutions as 8 megapixel. I have a one-meter tall photo hanging on my wall, which was taken with my IPhone. That is to say, you can print on one- meter poster with an 8 megapixel camera. We should ask ourselves when we have made such a large print, even when we made a print for the last time. There are photos being damaged in the hard disc.
Even though Mobile photography is common, we rarely hear the names that we can call “Mobile Photographer”. Could you give examples of the names who only take photos through mobiles?
Actually, I don’t know anybody who says that I only shoot with IPhone, this is my kind of what I do. If one takes photo with even DSLR to use in this area, the photo is loaded into Instagram, and you think he or she is a mobile photographer, but it has nothing to do with that. But, if I might as well express the names, for instance, Richard Koci Hernandez, he lives in the U.S., having also a book named Dawntown, and included in a very comprehensible book named IPhone Photography. In addition, he uses the technology in the best way. He has photos taken with Google Glass. Of course, we say, they would have given us Google Glass, we wouldn’t shoot... (Laughs) And Misho Baranovic, the owner of Pro Camera, lives in Australia. Now, Pro Camera is only available in IPhone, fully equipped with professional features. It has a structure with autofocus and white balance lock system, which means you won’t miss the photo. You enter manually, if the diaphragm is prioritized, a dark object passing in front of the square that you shoot does not affect the diaphragm, and you can shoot as set by you. The same system is avail- able in IPhone, what binds me is the superior features close to DSLR. On the other hand, for example there is Paris Mobile Photography Festival, which was organized for the fourth time. Nowadays, there is 2nd Mobile Photography and Video Festival in Iran. In addition, there is something called IPhonography Mobile Fest that is the festival in which the short-moves shot with IPhone... If I should give names from Turkey; Hakan Çınar, Mesut Bilgin and Hüseyin Özpehlivan, for example. And Güney Tepe from İstanbul, he was my student and has come to the very good places especially in Mobile Photography. There is a formation called Tiny Collective corresponding Magnum Photos. One of its members, a lady named Elif Suyabatmaz, is living in our country. She has opened a gallery behind Galatasaray High School, which consists of her mobile works. Fisheyedreams is her user name in Instagram. I also want to add this; we have a friend named Cem Aydın who has been dealing with this job since 2007, has attended the conferences in the U.S. and the workshops in Dubai, and has been giving lectures in Arı College IPhone class in Ankara, Turkey and has led to the establishment of that class. Nowadays, he is launching the largest mobile project ever done in Turkey. You can visit 90HappyDays.com. Within 90 days, the different persons are sent account each day and that photographer will produce the images that evoke happiness. This is the second day and I am the one to take photo, and then there will be an exhibition regarding this in Ankara Hilton.
