Born in 1989 in Marmaris, Meltem Şahin was accepted to Bilkent University Department of Graphic Design with talent scholarship, and graduated as the valedictorian of her class and school in 2012.
She drew editorial illustrations for magazines like Sabitfikir and BantMag. Three books she illustrated were published by Can Children’s Publishing. Her Nasreddin Hodja illustrations were exhibited at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, one of the major global events in children’s literature and publishing, as the only Turkish artist selected among three thousand applicants. The freelance illustrator is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art on a Fulbright scholarship.
Şahin is also designing puppets, and has prepared a short entertaining video with the toys. The music of the video is by Mert Kocadayı, and the puppets will soon be available for sale.
Speaking about the puppets, Şahin says, “My wooden puppets series ‘Kukla’ that I created, inspired by the Italian illustrator Fortunio Liceti’s book ‘De Monstris’, consists of 5 distinct characters. The characters can be articulated at the joints, and hung on the wall.”
